It has been three years and I am still angry about Donna Noble.

She was the first companion of the new series to not fall madly, sickeningly in love with the Doctor. She called him out on his shit. She recognized, immediately and without apology, the terrible darkness he is capable of. There have been exactly two kinds of people who have seen that darkness, and they are alternatively

willing to excuse or very deliberately ignore it, or

dead.

Except Donna. Who is able to look the Doctor in the eye and tell him, firmly but gently: you need someone to stop you.

And the absolute best, most spectacular thing about Donna is that she is not immediately willing to be that someone. He offers her the universe and she says no.

Instead she goes inside for Christmas dinner, because it is her wedding day and she has spent it alternatively being abducted and running for her life and and losing her job and watching her husband being eaten alive by giant spider people, and so she says no. No, she is not going to tag along and play conscience to the the Doctor’s genocidally inclined Pinocchio. She is going to change out of this fucking wedding dress and sit down and eat dinner with her family. The skinny alien can come along if he wants.

It is both tragic and horribly telling that the one person who knows and loves the Doctor well enough to stand up to him, to tell him no, meets the fate that Donna did. As if it’s not enough that’s she exiled from this big, fantastic universe she had only just begun to live in — but the brightest parts of herself had to be completely and utterly scrubbed out of existence, as well. Donna wanted to go out as she was, brilliant and marvelous and burning up inside, and he wouldn’t let her, and it is the cruelest, most bitter thing.

I was not alone at the shores that day. As I watched a little gray fish heave itself from the crashing waters, exhausted and struggling for survival, a man stood by me. A good man, a wise man. The sky was dark and angry-looking, and I remember being frightened by it. I remember wanting to help that little fish to safety, wanting to keep it alive – but as I stepped forward to help, the man spoke. “Don’t step on that fish, Castiel,” he said to me. “Big plans for that fish.” I did not question him. I was too young, to newly created, at the time to ask who he was, why he was there, how he came to be there that day. There was one question I did ask, however, as much as it embarrasses me to recall it.

“Are you my Father?” I asked – because I’d never seen my Father, never heard Him speak. This man knew the Plan for the fish. The only one who knew the Plan was the Father. But he just stared at me and shook his head. The ground was wet beneath our feet and made a loud squelching sound as he turned away from me.

“No, no. I’m – nobody important. Just a madman with a blue box,” he told me. He left me there alone, after that. I did not help the fish to safety, but it lived. It thrived.

That was the first time I’d ever seen the man with the blue box, but it was not the last.
